In Shenzhen held a freestyle combat tournament between full-size humanoid robots. The cars beat each other with their hands and feet, performed reversals, fell, again rose and continued the fight. In one of the battles, the robot received a kick at the level of his head and lost it, but even after that he attacked the opponent for some time.

The competition is called Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend, or URKL. It was organized by the Shenzhen company EngineAI, which develops humanoid robots. The tournament was held on July 16, 2026 in the cultural and sports center of the Nanshan district. The arena came 32 teams selected from more than 60 applicants.

All participants controlled the same robots T800 produced by EngineAI. This put the teams in an equal footing: it was impossible to win only at the expense of a more powerful or durable machine. The result depended on the program management, selected techniques and the ability to quickly respond to opponent movements.

Usually, small wheeled machines with disks, hammers and other built-in mechanisms are involved in the battles of robots. Here the rivals stood on two legs and were comparable in size to an adult. They attacked with their hands and feet, evaded and tried not to lose balance after the clashes.

For a two-legged robot, even a conventional strike is a complex task. The car needs to transfer weight to the support leg, raise the second, disperse it, hit it at the target and stop moving in time. The body at the same time pulls in the opposite direction, so the controller constantly adjusts the position of the joints and the center of gravity.

The error at any stage ends with a fall. A wheeled robot stands on a wide base, and a humanoid machine is held on two relatively small feet. A sharp push, an unsuccessful reversal or too strong swing easily deprive of its support.

During the T800 tournament, straight and lateral strikes were applied, the apperotts, performed rotations and raised their legs high. The fallen cars tried to get up and return to battle. Therefore, the arena checked not only the strength of impacts, but also the operation of the actuators, reaction speed, stability and the ability to recover from falls.

Most attention was brought by a duel, in which the head of one of the robots hit the blow. The car did not shut down and continued to wave its hands. The main computing units, drives and part of the control system are in the body, so the loss of the upper module did not lead to an immediate stop.

However, the robot could not fully see the opponent. In the head usually place cameras and other sensors that are responsible for the perception of the surrounding space. After their loss, the machine could continue pre-guaranteed movements, navigate the sensors of the joints and keep the body with an inertial system, but received much less information about what was happening around.

According to the published materials, it is impossible to say that the robots completely independently fought and made all tactical decisions. Such systems usually combine operator commands and automatic movement control. A person chooses the direction of the attack or starts the reception, and the robot himself calculates the work of the legs, the position of the body and effort in the joints.

Even with remote control, high automation is still necessary. The operator will not be able to manually set the position of each of the dozens of drives several times per second. The controller turns the general command like a blow or step into a consistent sequence of movements of the whole body.

EngineAI introduced the T800 at the end of 2025. The robot knows how to walk, run, jump, perform rotations and strikes with his feet. The company uses combat demonstrations to show the speed of its drives and the ability to keep balance during sudden movements.

The name T800 reminds of robots from The Terminator movies, but the development of the EngineAI is an electric human-like platform for testing movement and interaction with the environment. Fighting has become one of the ways to check the car with strong blows and unpredictable loads.

The T800 has a height of about 1.73 meters and weighs about 75 kilograms with a battery. The design provides for 29 degrees of freedom, which allow you to move the legs, arms and body. Each brush is also equipped with several movable joints.

Articular motors develop torque up to 450 newton meters. Thanks to this, the robot can abruptly start from the floor, quickly change direction and perform movements, for which you need to simultaneously disperse several heavy parts of the body.

The body is closed by panels of aviation aluminum. Active cooling works in the joints of the legs, as fast movements heat up the electric motors. The power provides a replaceable solid-state lithium battery.

For the perception of the space, the T800 uses a circular view lidar and stereoscopic cameras. Lidar measures the distance to the surrounding objects with laser pulses, and the pair of cameras helps to assess the depth and position of the obstacles.

The calculations are performed by the Intel N97 processor and the NVIDIA AGX Orin module. This platform processes sensor data, triggers recognition algorithms and calculates movements. The company says performance up to 275 trillion operations per second for artificial intelligence tasks.

During the battle, the computing system should work almost without delay. If the robot notices a blow too late or begins to adjust the position after losing the support, it will not be possible to restore balance. Even a few extra milliseconds can affect the result of rapid movement.

Fights create loads that are difficult to repeat on the usual laboratory track. The robot is pushed from different sides, forced to brake abruptly, change direction and carry weight from one leg to the other. At the same time, it is not known in advance where the next blow will hit and how strong it will turn out.

Such tests show the weak design. It can be found out that the individual joint overheats, the mount does not withstand a side impact, and the recovery algorithm does not cope with a certain position of the body. In a calm demonstration, such problems often remain imperceptible.

It is especially difficult to teach the robot to get up after a fall. The system should determine the position of the body, find the supports and raise a heavy body without damaging the joints. At the same time, the legs should not collide with each other or slip on the floor.

The impact is also checked by mechanical strength. Too hard frame conveys the force well, but suffers more in collisions. More malleable compounds absorb part of the energy, but reduce accuracy. Engineers have to find a compromise between speed, strength and resistance to damage.

Another problem is energy expenditure. Sharp accelerations require a large current, and the engines heat up quickly. The robot needs to keep the power until the end of the fight, without overheating the joints and control electronics.

The winner was determined not only by knockout. The judges took into account the accuracy of the blows, stability, protection, evasion and the condition of the machine after several rounds. Therefore, the robot could gain an advantage due to more careful control, even if its attacks looked less spectacular.

For the Engineai, the tournament became a competition and a public T800 test at the same time. The company wants to hold such events regularly and turn the battles of humanoid robots into a separate sports and engineering discipline.

The technologies developed for the ring can also be useful in peaceful tasks. The algorithm that holds the robot after a stroke will also help it not to fall in a collision with a load or movement on an unstable surface. Durable joints and a protected body are needed in warehouses, construction sites and emergency facilities.

However, the ability to put a high kick does not yet make the robot a good worker. In production, the accuracy of the hands, safety near people, the economical energy consumption and the ability to perform one task for hours without failures are much more important. Combat movements are convenient as a spectacular inspection of platform capabilities. They immediately show how quickly the robot moves, whether balance is and whether it is able to continue working after the collision. But this is only part of the characteristics that the machine will need outside the arena.

To fully autonomous robot fighters, able to independently study the enemy, choose tactics and change it during the fight, is still far away. While the person is involved in the management, and automation is mainly responsible for performing movements and the stability of the machine.

Nevertheless, the tournament showed how noticeably advanced full-size bipedal cars. They can already attack quickly, withstand strikes, get up after falling and continue to move even after serious damage. For engineers, the ring became a tough test site, where errors cannot be hidden in a pre-prepared scenario.
