Older components can last for decades in the Linux kernel, even when the original systems have long disappeared from operation, but the EFS file system is likely to leave the project already in the Linux 7.3 version. The driver code was put in line for deletion after more than 20 years without full support.

SGI used EFS for some CDs and partitions in the IRIX operating system. Before the release of IRIX 6.0, the file system remained one of the regular options, after which it was replaced by XFS. Linux still retains a driver that allows you to read such media.

In June, one of the developers proposed to take the outdated code under its responsibility and made several corrections to the assembly errors. At the same time, the developer has never worked with a real file system EFFS, so the accompanying kernel discussed whether further preservation of an extremely rare driver is justified.

As a result, the developers chose the removal. Christian Browner added appropriate changes to the VFS subsystem branch designed for Linux 7.3. The decision has not yet entered the final release, but the current status indicates the exclusion of the driver from the next version of the kernel later this year.

The developers explained the decision by the lack of real users and unnecessary costs with general changes in the kernel. To read old EFFS media, individual user tools remain, so they no longer consider the file system directly in the kernel.
